The Department of Fisheries at the Faculty of Science, University of Jaffna, Sri Lanka is dedicated to research and education in Fisheries Science. Offering undergraduate and postgraduate programs, it focuses on sustainable fisheries management and conservation. Through research, education, and community outreach, the department plays a crucial role in advancing knowledge and promoting the well-being of coastal communities in Sri Lanka.

 

Short Histroy

The history of the Department of Fisheries (DoF) traces back to its origins as the Centre for Development of Fisheries, founded in 1998 with the primary objective of offering a Diploma in Fisheries Science. Initially focused on capacity development within fishing communities, the department underwent significant evolution. In 2007, with approvals from the University and UGC, it transitioned into the Department of Fisheries, formally established in June 2009, as evidenced by a Gazette notification dated June 5th, 2009. Subsequently, Fisheries Science became a principal subject for Bachelor of Science (General and Honours) degrees, commencing from the Academic year 2009/10.

Programme Offered

Our teaching and research activities are designed to provide graduates with a broad knowledge base and critical thinking skills through multidisciplinary courses. Graduates gain theoretical knowledge and analytical skills that prepare them to tackle emerging issues in the fisheries sector. Through these programs, we aim to contribute to sustainable fisheries and ecosystem management in Sri Lanka.
